Knowledge is a prerequisite for risk assessment and emergency response planning in connection with oil spills in ice-covered water, whether the spill comes from shipping or direct from production.

Researchers from SINTEF Narvik are often out on the ice in Beisfjord, where they have placed buoys for the measurement of what happens during the establishment of ice in Beisfjord. In addition they have similar projects operating in other places, such as Lavangen and Gratangen.

The research is investigating the microscopic interactions between sea-ice and oil, for detection and risk management for sustainable operation.
